Beauty on Friday

What is the common thread of beauty running through all these pics?

A vacuum cleaner ...

My dining room table ...

A tatty old chair in a sunny corner ...

Washing hanging on the line ...

A big bright yellow lemon ...

Pale pink New Dawn rose bud ...

Moss on our garden path ...

A few small Marguerite daisies ...

The weird and wonderful New Zealand Lancewood ...

Tomatoes on the vine (we have tomatoes in June?) ...

A weathered garden seat ...

And The Craziest Blonde Dog in the World ...

The answer? Time. The beauty of time. More specifically, the beauty of time at home to do housework, to wander in the garden, to enjoy a few moments of sun. After such a hectic few weeks it was wonderful to be able to get in and clean my house. Truly. Even better was being able to sit back and enjoy the sight of it after I'd finished.

To top it off, DH and I went out for dinner together. Just the two of us. A date. With the boys all left home, finding time together is a lot easier these days but it was becoming rather predictable: dinner in front of the fire and a movie on telly. It was lovely to get out together and have that time. And we certainly can't complain about the food. My first taste of Baklava was everything I expected it to be. If I hadn't heard that it was so difficult to get right, I might be tempted to give it a go myself.

I loved this series of posts, Jules. Not only are the photos lovely, but you made me think as well. Finding beauty in ordinary things is a worthwhile task, if only for the gratitude one feels after noticing the small wonders that surround us. Now I'm inclined to look at beautiful details around me, every day.

P.S. Don't hesitate to make your own Baklava. It's really not that hard, and you don't have to follow the original recipe ;) My Mom and me, we do our own. We're no fond of the sugar syrup - too sweet for us, and prevents us from eating more than one piece - so we make a variation. A very distilled sugar syrup, with more lemon. I guess that's the beauty of cooking and making sweets - you can always customize :)
