This carol is a favourite of mine and has been around for a long time. Its origins have been lost in antiquity although it is believed that it extends back to the twelfth century, or even further to the eighth. It was originally written in Latin and is based on the prophecy from Isaiah that states that God will give Israel a sign that will be called Immanuel (Isaiah 7:14). This prophecy is fulfilled in the birth of Jesus (Matthew 1:23) who came to save people from their sins.
It is possible - perhaps even probable - that the music to this popular carol was added at a later date and is of French origin. The Latin was translated into English by John Mason Neale in 1851 - something for which the English speaking world is extremely grateful.
