It was the visit I'd been dreading: the first time The Most Adorable Granddaughter#5 visited and Kielsie wasn't at the French doors wagging her tail.
Those two were madly in love with each other. They had a mutual fan club going that began almost the first moment that Son #2 brought The Most Adorable Granddaughter#5 around. I even have a sneaking suspicion that "Kielsie" was her first word - or close to it.
Kielsie would know before we did when The Most Adorable Granddaughter#5 was at the front door. We'd see her standing at the French doors wagging her tail and comment that we must have visitors - and then the doorbell would ring. Even in her last days, when she was too weak to do much, when Kielsie heard The Most Adorable Granddaughter#5 at the front door, she'd gather her strength and stand at the French doors wagging her tail. When even this became too much, she would lie down and still wag her tail.
Her last visit, The Most Adorable Granddaughter#5 seemed to understand that Kielsie couldn't come to her, so she went to Kielsie. It was beautiful to behold.
So yesterday when The Most Adorable Granddaughter#5 and her sister came around, I was a little nervous. The Most Adorable Granddaughter#5 looked out the French doors and announced, "Kielsie's gone." She had a good look around - and came back to check a few times - just to make sure we weren't hiding Kielsie somewhere.
"Kieslie died," The Most Adorable Granddaughter#4 announced very matter of fact, saving me any need to offer explanations. Satisfied, The Most Adorable Granddaughter#5 said no more, but I did notice she'd check the French doors a few times during the evening - perhaps just to be certain that there was no Kielsie.
Perhaps another day I'll show them where Kielsie is buried and they can place flowers on the grave just like their cousins did, and we may sit around under the walnut tree talking about what we loved about Kielsie. Perhaps in time, DH and I will get another dog - but I will always treasure the memories and photos I have of a crazy mad love affair between a wee girl and a blonde dog.
