Farewell

As those around us farewell 2018, our family farewells a very dear pet.

Nehli, we only had you for four short years but the memories will live on: you dug holes and barked at birds while ignoring every feline for miles; you were aggressive towards the lawnmower and frightened by the vacuum cleaner and absolutely terrified of fireworks and thunder; you often ignored me but went crazy when visitors turned up (I'll never forget the most recent image of you greeting Son#5 just before Christmas with a great big doggy hug: your paws on his shoulders and excitement evident in every part of your doggy body); you dumped muddy balls in my clean washing although you never chewed the washing and only rarely attacked shoes; you retrieved sticks of every size and description (from tiniest twigs to huge logs) and expected us to throw them for you; you disliked the feel of sand in your mouth and had your own special way of picking up sticks off the beach in order to minimse contact with that dreadful substance; you learnt over time to go in the waves at the beach and had no qualms about trying to catch the water coming out of the end of the hose whenever I watered the garden; you unwittingly designed our garden from gates to fences to placement of plants; you knew before we did when The Most Adorable Granddaughters came to visit and alerted us accordingly; you were extremely patient, gentle and loving with children (DH's enduring memory is of The Most Adorable Granddaughter#7 calling out from beneath the walnut tree, "Nehli … come"); you were protective of those you loved and I suspect could have frightened any intruder if the need arose. In short, you were loved, adorable, and downright crazy.

We're going to miss you heaps. Farewell, our faithful friend.
