Salvage

Last weekend Son#3 asked us to babysit while he and DIL#3 went skiing. We were eager. We had stayed in the house they use when at the mountain and knew that we would be comfortable and have fun with The Most Charming Grandson#1 while his parents were otherwise occupied. We even decided to take The Most Adorable Granddaughters#1, #2 and #3 with us.

Since it was a road less travelled by The Most Adorable Granddaughters we stopped for some sightseeing on the way ...

On arrival at our destination we appeared to have a problem ... steam was coming from under the bonnet of our car. Nonplussed we rang for roadside service and Son#3 and DIL#3 went off up the mountain. The verdict was that the car couldn't be driven and would have to be towed back home later that afternoon. Undaunted we decided to enjoy the day.

We were all enchanted by the smiles of The Most Charming Grandson#1 ...

... who apparently thought it might be his day for mastering the stairs (alas, no, not just yet).

While The Most Adorable Grandson#1 napped, The Most Adorable Granddaughters challenged me to a game of Speed Rummy. This is noteworthy because I won for a change (and look at how many tiles they each still have to go!).

Once The Most Charming Grandson#1 woke we were able to enjoy a walk in the nearby reserve …

… before returning to the house ...

After lunch, which was sufficient but not the repast we had planned since we had no vehicle to drive to the nearest shops, we spent some time by the creek ...

... before returning to the house and soaking up the scenery while The Most Charming Grandson#1 had another nap ...

Son#3 and DIL#3 returned from skiing and we took our leave … in a salvage truck! A first for us and an experience most of us would not choose to repeat. But there is much for which to be thankful - not the least the wonderful day we had and the fact that I had woken early that morning and decided to throw a few food items into our bag which definitely came in handy. DH's insistence on always carrying extra jackets when going to the mountain also meant we did not freeze on our way home in the truck which if it had any heating, we didn't feel it in the back seat. And at the end of the day we arrived home safely, so despite all that had happened, it was a good outcome (even if the news from our mechanic on the following day left us frustrated and upset when we learnt we could have driven our car home and saved ourselves much hassle and money).

Still, having had such a special time with half of our grandchildren, and being able to enjoy such incredible scenery, it's hard to stay mad - even if we wanted to.
