Introduction

This year marked the first time New Zealand had a public holiday for Matariki, the Māori new year. Matariki celebrates the cluster of stars that rise in midwinter, and is an opportunity to remember the past, celebrate the present, and plan for the future.

With this the second long weekend in June, DH and I decided (almost on a whim, which is unusual for us) to make a trip to visit Son#3 and DIL#3 and The Most Charming Grandson#1. We had birthday presents for The Most Adorable Granddaughter#4 (whose birthday was on the public holiday, and whose birthday will only, apparently, fall on Matariki three - or four - times in the next 30 years) and for DIL#3, and a quilt for The Most Charming Grandson#1, and decided we could deliver them in person (or, as with The Most Adorable Granddaugher#4, at least get them closer to the recipient than if they stayed in our house). Besides, DIL#3 was now at least five days overdue and we thought we could be helpful entertaining the energetic Most Charming Grandson#1.

Travelling to visit either Son#2 or Son#3 and respective families affords us opportunities to take in some spectacular views, whatever the season, and we weren't disappointed this time.

But as magnificent and spectacular as these views were, they could not compete with the most perfect, most wonderful, most incredible sight that brought us pleasure the day after our arrival. While we were called on to look after The Most Adorable Grandson#1, DIL#3 did the incredibly hard work of bringing into the family another delightful wee boy.

And while we were super proud grandparents, I don't think anyone was more proud than Big Brother!

Welcome to the family Precious One.
