Cranberry and Choc Chip Muesli Slice

I think it was Elizabeth who said that a recipe post was 'safe'. It's not controversial, you're not exposing your most vulnerable side, and since I somehow deleted some particularly gorgeous photos of yours truly with the granddaughters (you'll have to take my word for it) I can't do my original post. Besides, it can be fun to share recipes with friends. I adapted this recipe to come up with a yummy nutritious slice that is perfect for snack time. It can be easily doubled and keeps well in an airtight container. My DIL#1 liked the original recipe but the rest of us thought it was a little bland - hence the reason for adjusting it. I like anything with dried cranberries (craisins we call them) but you could substitute whatever dried fruit you have on hand. I think walnuts or pecans would also work quite well in this recipe. My recipe: 2-1/2 cups rolled oats 3/4 cup desiccated coconut (optional - you can use all, some, or omit it altogether) 1 cup dark choc bits

Adapting Short Row Heels (A Knitting Post)

(Please note: if you are not a knitter or have put down your needles for the Northern summer, you probably won't be interested in this post. Its purpose is to share my experiments and failures and to give me access to my notes in the future when I've forgotten what I've done and how I felt about the various steps. It's also likely to be picture heavy, although pictures will probably be poor quality because it's hard to photograph your feet in socks, especially at this time of the year when legs are not usually on display and therefore not at their [ahem] best.) With two different socks on the go, and wanting a simple heel that fits my foot, I've been looking at short row heels. Amongst sock aficionados I'm not sure that short row heels rank very highly which shouldn't bother me, but it does. I started with short row heels and love their simplicity but have ventured into other types when the pattern calls for it or when I've wanted to be seen to be

Miracle Water

Water. Life-sustaining water. Every living things requires it. Here in the West, a clean supply of drinking water is taken for granted. It's only when we don't have it (as happened recently in a North Island town) that we realise we have come to view clean water as a basic right. So it seems rather petty to be complaining about the state of our town supply. A First World problem given that it is clean and free of most contaminants. It has not been used for bathing or laundering before reaching us. Animals have not laid dead it in for days. And we're not likely to contract cholera or typhoid fever from drinking it. It's clean. But it's also hard. And, at times, heavily chlorinated. Recently my hair has appeared more dry and brittle than usual. When we first moved here over twenty-one years ago, I complained about the havoc wrecked on my hair and skin by the water. There didn't seem to be anything I could do about it, and so I learnt to live with it
