Spitting Chips

This appears to be a distinctly Australian expression which basically means "I am so angry that I can't get an articulate word out and can only spit". Apparently it once meant "I'm so thirsty that I can only spit dry" but over the years it has changed and now if anyone were to say they were "spitting chips" you'd know that now would be a good time to make your exit unless you wanted to be on the receiving end of a severe tongue lashing! Anyway today I'm spitting chips. I'm so angry that I want to cry - but I'm too angry to actually cry. What has brought this on? Money. Or to be more exact, pay rises. All early childhood teachers have just received a pay rise. Cool - except that my organisation has apparently decided that they no longer need assistant supervisors and so are not going to pay the assistant supervisor rate. Miracle Water

Water. Life-sustaining water. Every living things requires it. Here in the West, a clean supply of drinking water is taken for granted. It's only when we don't have it (as happened recently in a North Island town) that we realise we have come to view clean water as a basic right. So it seems rather petty to be complaining about the state of our town supply. A First World problem given that it is clean and free of most contaminants. It has not been used for bathing or laundering before reaching us. Animals have not laid dead it in for days. And we're not likely to contract cholera or typhoid fever from drinking it. It's clean. But it's also hard. And, at times, heavily chlorinated. Recently my hair has appeared more dry and brittle than usual. When we first moved here over twenty-one years ago, I complained about the havoc wrecked on my hair and skin by the water. There didn't seem to be anything I could do about it, and so I learnt to live with it...

Cranberry and Choc Chip Muesli Slice

I think it was Elizabeth who said that a recipe post was 'safe'. It's not controversial, you're not exposing your most vulnerable side, and since I somehow deleted some particularly gorgeous photos of yours truly with the granddaughters (you'll have to take my word for it) I can't do my original post. Besides, it can be fun to share recipes with friends. I adapted this recipe to come up with a yummy nutritious slice that is perfect for snack time. It can be easily doubled and keeps well in an airtight container. My DIL#1 liked the original recipe but the rest of us thought it was a little bland - hence the reason for adjusting it. I like anything with dried cranberries (craisins we call them) but you could substitute whatever dried fruit you have on hand. I think walnuts or pecans would also work quite well in this recipe. My recipe: 2-1/2 cups rolled oats 3/4 cup desiccated coconut (optional - you can use all, some, or omit it altogether) 1 cup dark choc bits...
