Hi SchnauzerMom, cool the snow was - as in freezing! It started snowing while we were there and then it turned into tiny little bits of ice like hail. We ended up rather cold and wet which isn't that great in winter. I've always been amazed at the American movies that show children playing in the snow and making snow angels. Don't the get all wet? An American friend explained that your snow is more powdery than ours which tends to be icy. I can only take his word for it having only experienced snow in this part of the world.
Bunches of yarn, we felt the earthquake but it was quite a distance from us and in a fairly low populated area. There was no damage to buildings, however they were going to access the area by helicopter today to see if there had been any major land slips because it is a popular area for tramping (hiking) and tourists. Better to know that an area is inaccessible than get in the bush and find out the hard way. With 2 deaths this week of people who got stranded in the bush I guess it has heightened the need for such precautions.
