Yield Not

This past week as I have somewhat followed the court case of Caleb Flynn I have felt a range of emotions from disbelief through to disgust and even almost-fear. For those who don't know (and DH is one of them because he avoids social media), Ashley Flynn went to sleep in the marital bed on the night of February 16, 2026 and never woke up. Her husband supposedly discovered her with two gunshot wounds to the head and claimed it was the work of an intruder. Three days later he was arrested for the murder of his wife and it quickly came to light that he was having an affair with worship leader Alleigha Botner from his church and who was almost half his age. Police have recovered over 107,000 text messages that they sent each other over a twelve to eighteen month period, which amounts to something like 300 messages a day. Church. Worship. Adultery. Lies. Secrets. Murder. If this has overtones of David and Bathsheba that's because there are some similarities. But there are also so...

To Do Differently

Sometimes, in the more contemplative moments of life, it's not unusual to look back and think what one could have done differently. Although, as a parent, I realise there is much I could have done differently (loved more, laughed more, to name just two) this is not that. Rather, it's a look at what I/we would have done differently had we only know back then what we know now. Take this Wandin Glory. It's an Australian variety of a weeping apple and I absolutely love it. We planted it almost twelve months ago when the flowering cherry we planted when we first moved into our house in 1996 decided to up and die. While the weeping flowering cherry delighted us with its blossom every spring and developed an interesting shape reminiscent of ancient forests, it supplied nothing for the table. Which brings me to what we would now do differently if we were to start our entire garden from scratch. We would plant more fruit trees. Plant them in the flower garden. Espalier them along th...

Officially Spring

Today officially marks the first day of Spring, but one could be forgiven for thinking Spring has forgotten about those of us living below the equator. As an old meme I was saw said: "Cannot be loaded in your country." That's certainly how it feels at the moment - even if the daffodils and irises disagree. But there are some good things about winter. Things like cosy sweaters ... Aguacero Sweater knitted in 5 ply/sport yarn. I undid the hem after this photo was taken to make the back sit down lower. and warm snuggly gloves ... Just one from the two pairs that I made with patterns from Norah Gaughan's Knitted Cable Sourcebook. fruit loaf straight from the oven ... cinnamon rolls ... Recipe here. and date swirls ... (Rather than using butter and cinnamon, I made a date paste and the results were incredible. I can see myself making this again and again.) But, cosy sweaters and comfort food aside, I'm looking forward to warmer weather. To getting out in the garden m...
