Shock

Yesterday as I was having my morning tea break and scrolling through my phone, I saw the headline that Charlie Kirk had been assassinated. At first, the name meant little to me, but when a photo flashed onto the screen, I realised that I had watched his clips from time to time and had been impressed with the way he always debated from a place of grace and truth, and was not afraid to share the gospel.

That such a young man, a husband and father, was killed in such a shocking way should sadden us all. And it certainly wasn't long before tributes started filling social media feeds. There was an overall feeling of shock and disbelief, even amongst those who didn't share his political views or Christian faith. And along with this, a struggle to make sense of what is senseless.

For Christians, all too aware that there are few willing to stand up for Christ and for truth in today's world, it would be so easy to feel despair for what has happened - to ask, Why? Why this one taken when there are so few willing to do what he did? Our hearts ache for his wife and young children, and for all those who loved him.

But what we must not forget is that God is sovereign. We may not understand, but we do know that even from this incredible act of evil, God can bring good. Yes, we trust God because He is good. We may only see in part. But we hold onto the fact that God is good.

Almost 70 years ago, five young missionaries were killed in Ecuador. As the news of their martyrdom spread around the world, a desire to reach the unsaved for Christ was ignited amongst young people and many felt called to missions. And even though the original five missionaries didn't see fruit from their efforts, those that came after them did.

We don't know what will come about as a result of Charlie Kirk's death. Evil may think it has silenced his voice. But we know that our God has overcome evil and while we might be struggling with what is happening, Charlie is now rejoicing in heaven with his Saviour.
